Some recent changes to the platform’s account-sharing policies aim to generate fresh revenue that would otherwise be lost when users share Netflix passwords outside of families. This has been highlighted in the updated FAQ section of Netflix’s India website.

We clarify how Netflix plans to stop users from sharing passwords in India and elsewhere by rolling out the OTP system.

Who Can Use Your Netflix Account?

Netflix will allow account holders to share passwords but only with family members within a physical household. To ensure this, the company requires users to log in from their home location via a home Wi-Fi network at least once in 31 days and stream content through the Netflix app or website.

netflix while traveling

If users are traveling, Netflix will allow access to its services on hotel TVs. This can be done by requesting a temporary code from the service to authorize sign-in. With this, users will be able to access the account for seven days during the journey.

However, if the above procedure is not followed while using accounts away from home, Netflix may block the account.

Prevent Netflix from blocking your account and device

Netflix uses certain important information to determine the origin or home location of an account. IP addresses, device IDs and account activity. The service then uses this data to allocate a primary slot for an account. Normally, Netflix allows users to keep track of devices that use the account outside the home location and account holders can sign out of such devices and change their password.

However, the anti-password-sharing drive requires account holders to sign in to their home Wi-Fi network and use the platform’s services once every 31 days. “Trusted Device” status and prevent Netflix from blocking accounts.

It is possible to allow users to access Netflix account outside the home location. This will require verification from the main account holder. To verify the device:

When attempting to log in, Netflix will share a link to the account holder’s registered email address or mobile phone number.

The link then redirects the user to a page that displays a unique four-digit verification code.

The off-location user has to enter this code within 15 minutes after which the code will expire. If the code expires before it is punched in, a new verification code must be requested.

The off-location user can then access Netflix services. However, it is possible that this verification process may be required from time to time.

How many people can share a Netflix account?

Netflix offers a choice of four plans and multiple device support for users in India. These plans differ in pricing and also allow different types of users or screens with them. If the company doesn’t decline to share illegal passwords, Netflix could probably change the current pricing on its plans and charge users for requesting login credentials from key account holders.

netflix plans in india

Netflix currently offers a choice of four plans in India and has recently introduced price cuts to make its offers more attractive. The base or mobile plan gives a user the facility of mobile screen streaming at a monthly cost of Rs 149. Viewers availing this plan can watch content only in Standard Definition (SD). The highest plan currently allows compatibility across a total of six screens and four devices.
