The device features a triple-camera setup on the rear with a large 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor, and Vivo has enlisted the help of reputed German brand ZEISS to enhance the camera capabilities. Apart from this, the handset also makes use of 50MP IMX758 portrait camera and 12MP IMX633 ultra-wide shooter. The X90 Pro’s dedication to photography becomes apparent from the moment you open the camera app. So, let’s take a closer look at the device’s imaging capabilities to determine whether it truly deserves the title of “camera champ”.

Primary sensor: Daylight and landscape

I got a chance to take the Vivo X90 Pro for a test drive in Vietnam and tested its optical capabilities. Whether it was the stalactite-covered caves in Ninh Binh or the soaring limestone islands of Ho Long Bay, viewing the world through Vivo’s flagship smartphone proved spectacular. As mentioned above, the Vivo X90 uses a 50MP 1-inch Sony IMX988 sensor for its primary image capturing.

The ZEISS Natural Color tab in the camera app is part of Vivo’s collaboration, and it adds more natural tones to shots. This means that saturation levels and highlight clipping are better controlled than with the mode turned off. While it may come down to preference, my personal preference remained the natural color mode for most of the images I took.

While default images are pixel-binned to 12.5MP, the Hi-Res mode allows for full 50MP snaps that are large enough to crop up to 10X without losing detail. The larger sensor size also allows for a more shallow depth of field which in turn achieves a natural bokeh effect for close-up subjects. Speaking of which, to get even closer, the sensor automatically switches to Super Macro for some very practical shots. The ZEISS T* coating does a good job of reducing lens flare when pointed directly at a light source.

Camera Features and Portrait Mode

Portrait imagery is handled by the 50MP Sony IMX758 portrait camera. There are six ZEISS-themed Portrait Mode styles to choose from, each a little different from the last. I loved the natural look of the Biotar and use it for most of my portrait capture. Other modes make slight changes to the level of bokeh or add facial toning to make subjects pop out more.

What remained common in all the scenarios was the sensor’s ability to isolate the background flawlessly. Edge detection was almost always on point, even in a variety of lighting conditions. Portrait on the front camera worked similarly, though here I much prefer the look of the ZEISS Cinematic mode. And of course, the final image is able to adjust the background blur or even change the focus to suit your needs.

Other subtle features include the ZEISS landscape and architecture mode which uses a targeted blur to make landscapes appear smaller. The feature is a bit hit or miss in terms of utility, depending on how well you shoot the images. There’s also a ZEISS APC mode that adjusts and corrects some degree of skew in landscape shots.

There’s also Double Exposure which basically overlays a translucent preset or photo you took with the current viewfinder image. It works in a similar way to combine front and back camera shots in real time. It’s a great feature that can produce amazing results, but it takes some practice to master. More impressive is the Pro mode which allows you to experiment with a lot of photography parameters such as white balance, exposure, shutter speed, focus and more. What I really like is that the Pro mode can be implemented across all three lenses, whereas most phones only allow you to fiddle with the primary shooter.

Low Light, Sports Mode and Videography

Night time photography is one of the highlights of the device. Vivo’s V2 chip is specially tuned to reduce the noise level as well as make the image brighter. What’s more, the IMX989 has an f/1.7 aperture, which Vivo claims is the highest for the current generations of 1-inch sensors. Beyond that it’s the Vivo’s computational photography that adds tons of detail to the shadows, accurately renders colors for the scene, and captures focus quite effectively. Furthermore, the sensor takes advantage of the highly stable OIS mechanism that stabilizes any involuntary shakes during shooting. The Zeiss Natural Color tab is again easy to add a touch of realism and stay true to the night.

Another cracking feature, which I used more than any other, is the sports mode. It features near-zero shutter lag and faithfully replicates what the viewfinder is displaying. So if I reduce the exposure in Night Shot and capture using Sports mode, the final image doesn’t unnecessarily add too much light. This is really a surprising feature and one that I have not seen on any modern flagship till date.

Videography also takes advantage of both the V2 chip and the excellent stabilization to latch on, especially during very low-light scenes. Exposure is well adjusted in the viewfinder and behind the scenes, Vivo’s computational chops add more detail to videos. Under regular conditions, with plenty of light hitting the sensor, the X90 Pro manages extremely stable shots with great dynamic range and vibrant colours. HDR10+ video only adds to the detail, although the frame rate is limited to just 30fps. Add to that the Zeiss’ Cinematic mode for portrait-style video that shifts focus from subject to subject.

Decision

Clearly, the X90 Pro is designed with an impressive array of features that cater to a diverse range of smartphone photographers. I wish it also came with a telephoto sensor, but barring that, I can confidently say that the device’s advanced computational capabilities and large sensor size make it a compelling option for professional photographers.

Vivo X90 Pro (Review) has been announced with a hefty price tag of Rs 84,999.
