A recent image that has surfaced may surprise many – the Ola 4kWh (3.97kWh) battery pack for the Ola S1 Pro could set you back Rs 87,298 if it needs to be replaced beyond warranty. While Ola Electric offers 3 years/unlimited kms warranty, the cost of replacing the battery pack can be up to 62 per cent of the total cost of the vehicle. Ola S1 Pro is currently being sold at a discount and its price has been kept at Rs 1.28 lakh (ex-showroom).
The economics are similar even when one considers the Ola S1 premium electric scooter with a smaller 3kWh (2.98kWh) battery pack. A picture of the label on the packaging of the battery pack reads MRP of Rs 66,549. Ola S1 premium electric scooter is priced at Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom). This means that the cost of the battery pack on the Ola S1 electric scooter accounts for 66 per cent of the total cost of the EV. A similar debate had come to the fore last year, as the battery replacement cost of the Tata Nexon EV came to Rs 7 lakh.
However, battery packs are meant to last a long time before they need to be replaced, and the company also takes into account the decline in battery health and has made provisions that allow battery packs to last longer enable you to walk. However, questions arise later in the life cycle of the vehicle, when battery health declines and the electric scooter is out of warranty period.
