At the launch of Filmfare Awards, Bollywood actor Salman Khan created a lot of buzz by stressing on the need for censorship on OTT platforms. Salman spoke about how he thinks “clean material” is always a “better option” as it works better and how actors who refuse to do bold scenes are often dropped.
Speaking about OTT, Khan said that he does not believe that OTT is a “cooler version of TV” despite popular perception these days and that he has been in show business since 1989, yet he never did. He criticized OTT content, saying that “obscenity, nudity and profanity (abusive content)” needed to be stopped and suggested that there should be censorship on these platforms as well.
He expressed concern over the accessibility of such material to young children, “Now 15-16 year old children can see. You would like your little daughter to see all this… on the pretext of studying.’ Khan reiterated that there is a need to keep a tab on OTT content. “Cleaner the content, better it will be, higher will be its viewership.”
Salman also took a dig at actors doing intimate scenes on screen. “Aapke sab kuch kar liya… love making, kissing, exposing and you are entering the building and your watchman is watching your content.” This could be a “security” concern, Salman said. ,Live in India, a little bit is fine, but this much happened in between. Jake’s got a little control now is,” he elaborated.
Salman emphasized that in the race of OTT, some talented actors also succeed in doing such scenes, but those who deny it are often left behind. He strongly suggested the idea of censorship and said that if there can be censorship in films and TV where they provide adult certificates to films based on censorship policies, why can’t OTT content go through the same process of censorship evaluation?
