Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs iPhone 14 Pro Max camera comparison: A battle between the camera gods

Say “cheese!” Well, whenever you get your hands on one of these camera geniuses, I am sure you will want to try taking some pictures first. I am talking about the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which packs an impressive 200MP primary camera, and the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, which comes with a 48MP main shooter.

In this article, I will compare the cameras of these two powerful flagship devices. Although both the phones are known for their excellent camera quality, but we will see which phone turns out to be the real boss. So, go through the article to know the result.

portrait shot

I’ll start the comparison with the portrait shot first because, while doing the comparison, I was amazed to see the results captured by these devices. Both the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro Max take beautiful, vivid and rich color portraits. However, the main difference between these images is that the picture taken with the S23 Ultra has a cooler tone, while the 14 Pro Max captures a warmer tone. Also, when zooming in at full crop, I noticed that the iPhone’s image has slightly more detail than the S23 Ultra, which gives it an edge this round. Hence, this round goes in favor of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max.

daylight landscape photo

After the portrait image, let’s look at the daylight standard shot. The results in these images seem to be completely reversed, as the picture taken by the iPhone 14 Pro Max has some flaws. As you can see, the sun is in the far left corner and the entire sky is overexposed, and the sunlight is visible to a large extent in this shot. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, on the other hand, captured such stunning images that I am sure you will not hesitate to share any of the landscape shots taken with it on your social media. Although colors are somewhat saturated compared to the iPhone, the dynamic range and vividness make the picture better this round. As a result, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra takes the cake here.

Daylight Ultra-Wide Angle

The same situation can also be seen in ultra-wide angle photographs. Here again, both the sun and the sky are overexposed on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Also, like the previous image, here too the sunlight flare is quite clearly visible. In fact, if you notice, the trees on the right side of the iPhone shot appear darker, which is a major drawback here. However, like daylight landscape snaps, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra takes colorful and engaging photos with a controlled dynamic range. So, without any doubt, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra wins again.

high resolution

Ahead, I’ve attached high-resolution photos taken with both phones. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra includes a 200MP camera sensor, which we’ve previously seen on smartphones like the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, Redmi Note 12 Pro+, and the Infinix Zero Ultra. In contrast, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has ditched the 12MP shooter and instead comes with a 48MP primary camera. Now, if you look at these images, you’ll notice that the iPhone image has a bluish tint, while the Samsung image is noticeably warmer. It was the opposite in previous snaps. Also, on the 14 Pro Max the sky in the far left corner appears extremely blue, creating an unnatural image. With this, we can say that Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra captures better color balance in high-resolution mode.

However, when I zoomed in to see details, the iPhone 14 Pro Max emerged as the clear winner. The text on the iPhone image is noticeably clearer than the one shot with the S23 Ultra. In this round, the iPhone’s 48MP sensor overtook Samsung’s 200MP sensor. Hence, iPhone 14 Pro Max stands as the winner here.

the winner – Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max

3x zoom

Both the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro Max include a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The pictures above show that there is not much difference between the two. Although the image captured by the Samsung has a cooler tone than the image captured by the iPhone, both phones capture rich and vivid colors.

However, when you zoom in on the pictures, the printed text at the top of this slider is clearly visible on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the upper yellow area is also overexposed. As a result, I find that both the phones take almost identical pictures with minor differences.

the winner – tie

10x zoom

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra also features a 10MP periscope lens that offers 10x optical zoom, which the iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn’t have. Nevertheless, I took pictures at 10x zoom from both the phones to find out the real difference. If you don’t zoom in on the photos, you can see that the iPhone manages to take a sharp picture with vibrant colors, which sets the tone for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, cropping in closer, you can see that the iPhone is nowhere near the Samsung in terms of detail. In the picture taken from Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the text and leaves on the yellow part are sharper than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apart from this, the S23 Ultra is also capable of clicking 100x zoom shots, so you can capture the moon as well. In the photos above, you can see that Samsung retains detail even at such high levels of digital zoom, all thanks to the company’s AI Super-Resolution technology. With all these factors, I can say that Samsung Galaxy S23 is ahead of iPhone 14 Pro Max in ultra zoom section.

the winner – Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

close-up and macro

Moving on, if we look at the close-up aspect of both the devices, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will surely disappoint you. As you can see in the slider above, the iPhone falls short when it comes to taking close-up shots. This is the maximum close-up I was able to capture with it. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra can take amazingly close pictures that will surely amaze you. The detail captured in the Samsung image is really excellent, with the petals and pollen clearly defined on this flower, making it a beautiful sight.

Furthermore, even when comparing macro shots, the iPhone 14 Pro Max does not match the level of detail in the image captured by the S23 Ultra. Hence the close-up and macro rounds also go in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

the winner – Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

selfie

So far, it is clear that the S23 Ultra has a clear advantage over the iPhone 14 Pro Max in terms of rear camera quality. Now, let us turn our attention to the front camera test. Both phones take great selfies, but their color balance is vastly different, as we noticed when comparing the rear cameras. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has cool colors, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has warm tones. The most important difference, however, is that my sweatshirt appears black in the snap taken with the iPhone, which is wrong. The true color can be seen in the picture taken from Samsung. The actual color of my sweatshirt is a mix of blue and black, which the iPhone couldn’t capture accurately.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra undoubtedly has better color science when it comes to the front camera, but on closer inspection, you’ll notice that both phones struggle to detect edges in front portrait mode. In these pictures, the background is seeping to some extent near the ears. Still, Samsung S23 Ultra wins this round due to better color reproduction.

lowlight photo

After all the daytime shots, let’s move to low-light images to understand more about these phones. Here the situation is completely reversed, unlike in daylight, the iPhone 14 Pro Max takes the lead here. As you can see, the picture taken by iPhone looks much brighter than the picture taken by Samsung phone. The iPhone 14 Pro Max took sharp pictures with controlled lighting. In fact, most of the objects in the iPhone’s image are clearly visible. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra takes dark pictures and overexposes the light inside my home temple. Hence, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a leader in low-light photography.

the winner – iPhone 14 Pro Max

night mode

Furthermore, even with Night Mode enabled, the iPhone 14 Pro Max stands out as the clear winner. The photo taken by the iPhone 14 Pro Max is surprisingly bright, and objects appear sharp, just like in a regular lowlight shot. The only drawback here is that the iPhone fails to manage the light brightness in this mode. Whatever it is, in this situation the iPhone 14 Pro Max is being considered as the hero.

the winner – iPhone 14 Pro Max

lowlight selfie

While the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s rear camera may have an advantage in low-light photography, the Samsung Galaxy S23 reigns the ultra low-light selfie game yet again. In the slider above, it is quite clear that the S23 Ultra captures a brighter and sharper image than the one taken with the 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Pro Max fails to capture enough light and detail in this landscape, making the photo look like an oil painting. With this, we can conclude that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has reclaimed its title as the winner.

the winner – Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Decision

Looking at all the comparison shots, I can say that Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes out on top. Whether it is daylight pictures or selfies, Samsung phones have an advantage in photography compared to the iPhone. However, when it comes to low-light images, the iPhone 14 Pro Max shines as a better snapper. Additionally, I also compared the videos shot with both the devices and found that the iPhone S23 beats the Ultra. You can see it for yourself in the video attached at the bottom of this article. So, if you are looking for a phone that can meet your photography needs, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a better option. On the other hand, if shooting videos is your main priority, then the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the way to go.
