First an acquaintance for the brand

Tecno officially entered the foldable smartphone segment this week after unveiling the Tecno Phantom V Fold at MWC 2023. This is Tecno’s first foldable phone and the brand has taken inspiration from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. The Tecno Phantom V Fold sports a book-style design, with a large edge-to-edge display on the cover and a large, tablet-shaped flexible display when unfolded. While the highlight is obviously its foldable design, the Tecno Phantom V Fold also packs top-notch hardware under the hood.

I managed to spend some time with the Tecno Phantom V Fold at the company’s booth at MWC 2023, and here are some quick thoughts.

Hands-on with the Tecno Phantom V Fold

As you can see from the pictures, the Tecno Phantom V Fold looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Honor Vs, OPPO Find N2, and so on. In its default state, the device offers a vertical display with 1080×2550 resolution and noticeable bezels around the sides. The screen supports up to 120Hz refresh rate. Unfolding the device reveals a large, square shaped flexible screen which turns the device into a mini tablet.

The hinge mechanism of the Tecno Phantom V Fold is on par with Samsung’s foldable devices, providing a satisfying snap when closed. However, the crease in the middle is noticeable, and it remains to be seen how the phone will hold up after multiple folds. Tecno Phantom V Fold comes with a time tested design. Tecno seems to have played it safe here, which isn’t a bad way to go for your debut foldable. The device doesn’t feel as refined as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4. However, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy Z Fold took four iterations to reach its current level of sophistication.

The rear panel of the Tecno Phantom V Fold has a faux leather feel, which gives it a premium look and ensures that you get a good grip to pry open the device. A large circular camera module occupies the top half of the panel. It has a 50MP triple camera system. Meanwhile, there are two punch-hole selfie cameras, one on the cover display and one on the flexible screen.

Under the hood, the Tecno Phantom V Fold is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM (with support for RAM expansion up to 9GB) and 512GB of internal storage. Other key specifications of the Tecno Phantom V Fold include a 5,000mAh battery, Android 13 out-of-the-box, and a Type-C port.
