Spotify removes ‘Kala Chashma’, ‘Kalank’ and many more songs after licensing dispute with Zee Music

Here’s how fans reacted on Twitter

Zee Music had over a dozen singles on Spotify’s Daily Top 200 Songs chart in India. The most popular songs include ‘Maiyya Mainu’ from Jersey, ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’, ‘Makhna’ from Drive and ‘Zalima’ from Raees.

However, the removal of songs from Zee’s label has sparked anger among some Bollywood music lovers, with some posting funny comments on Twitter and several Spotify users threatening to cancel their subscriptions. One user wrote that he is shifting to YouTube Music. Meanwhile, another user wrote, ‘Take 100-200 extra but renew the agreement friends’.

What is the tussle between Spotify and Zee Music?

According to a Spotify spokesperson, Spotify and Zee Music were unable to come to a licensing agreement. Spotify has attempted to come up with novel approaches to deal with Zee Music during these talks, and they continue to hold talks in good faith in the hope of arriving at a mutually satisfactory decision.

The report mentions that this is not the first time that Zee Music has gone missing from a music site. This has happened in the past as well.

Spotify has been in India for four years. Market research platform Statista says that by the last quarter of 2022, the platform had 205 million paid subscribers worldwide. With 93.6 million YouTube subscribers, Zee Music Company is second only to T-Series in the world, which has 238 million subscribers.
