Moto G73 vs Redmi Note 12 Camera Comparison: Who Takes Better Photos?

The Moto G73 (Review) and Redmi Note 12 (Review) compete closely with each other in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment in India. Both are 5G enabled smartphones that aim to provide all-round performance to their consumers. If you’re on the fence with either of these devices, this camera comparison will surely help. Read on to know which smartphone is better at taking photos, Redmi Note 12 and Moto G73. But before we jump to the results, let’s look at the camera specs of these phones.

Moto G73 vs Redmi Note 12 5G camera specifications

Redmi Note 12 5G packs triple rear cameras with 48MP (f/1.8) primary sensor, 8MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens, and 2MP (f/2.4) macro unit. The cameras support dual LED flash, HDR and up to 1080p 30fps video recording. On the front, the handset packs a 13MP snapper with f/2.45 aperture lens for selfies and video calling in a punch-hole setup.

The Moto G73, on the other hand, sports a dual-rear camera setup with a 16MP (f/2.4) front camera and a 50MP primary sensor, which Motorola claims is carried over from last year’s premium Edge 30 Pro smartphone. The main sensor is supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, which also doubles up as a macro sensor. The handset comes with HDR and an LED flash.

daylight hdr

There is hardly any difference between the camera performance of Moto G73 and Redmi Note 12 in daylight with HDR enabled. Both the devices are equally fast at focusing and saving images to the gallery. As a result, it is not the difference of day and night, but as you can see in the camera shots above, the colors look well saturated on the Redmi smartphone. The Moto smartphone offers slightly cooler tones, which makes RGB colors extra vivid. That said, the 50MP primary sensor on the Moto G73 captures more detail and offers better dynamic range than the 48MP on the Redmi Note 12.

the winner: tie

ultra-wide images

Unlike the main camera, the ultra-wide lens on the Redmi Note 12 and Moto G73 outputs images of the same 8MP resolution. Both images lack sharpness around the edges. However, it is the Moto G73 that takes more likeable wide-angle shots than its counterpart even with a cooler tone. You’ll also notice that the Moto image has more details in the center than the Redmi Note 12 image, which lacks sharpness. Colors are close to reality.

the winner: Moto G73

macro images

Even though the Redmi Note 12 has a dedicated 2MP snapper for macro images, it couldn’t beat the Moto G73. The Redmi smartphone consistently failed to deliver macro shots with good detailing and accurate colours. This was not the case with the Moto G73, which uses its 8MP ultra-wide snapper for macro shots. Even though sharpness goes for a toss, the handset delivers acceptable images for the price.

the winner: Moto G73

selfies

For selfies, the 16MP snapper on the Moto G73 does a better job with facial details and skin tones. The 13MP selfie camera on the Redmi Note 12 smoothes out details, especially in the shadows. The Moto G73, on the other hand, does a good job of retaining facial details as well as keeping colors accurate.

the winner: Moto G73

lowlight photography

The low-light capabilities of the Redmi Note 12 and Moto G73 aren’t very impressive, but they get the job done. Out of all the cameras, the primary camera does the best job in capturing images with enough details in low light and indoors on both the smartphones. Be that as it may, the handsets tend to exaggerate some colors a bit at times. If you look closely at shots of a mall, you’ll notice that the Redmi Note 12 has trouble balancing whites, while the Moto G73 overexposes reds and blues. Simply because the Moto image has less noise and more detail than its arch rival, the round goes to the Moto G73.

the winner: Moto G73

night mode

Both the Moto G73 and Redmi Note 12 come with a dedicated night mode. The latter kicks in automatically on the Moto smartphone in low light, but you also have the option of turning it on manually. Both phones smooth out details to keep noise levels down, but the Moto G73 comes out on top again. As seen from the images, the Moto smartphone defined the highlights with trees, and didn’t let the glow of street lights run across the frame, unlike the Redmi Note 12.

the winner: Moto G73

Decision

The Moto G73 is undoubtedly the winner here, winning five out of six rounds. This can be attributed to its flagship-grade Ultra Pixel 50MP primary and 16MP selfie cameras that capture more details than its competitors. However, as stated above, the handset oversaturates colours. If you don’t want that and are looking for a smartphone that offers more natural looking shots at the cost of losing some details, then the Redmi Note 12 is the way to go.
