Companion Mode Rolled Out in Android Beta

With WhatsApp beta for Android v2.23.8.2, companion mode is being rolled out to everyone in the program, according to a report by WABetaInfo. It mentions that after starting the download, it may take up to 24 hours for all beta testers to be able to use the feature.

WhatsApp Companion Mode: What is it?

The feature, which is an extension of the multi-device functionality, is aimed at enabling users to link their current WhatsApp account to any other mobile device. Users can view their chats on a second device after linking an existing WhatsApp account to a secondary mobile phone without the need for an active internet connection on the first phone. Currently, Companion Mode is not available on WhatsApp for iOS. Consequently, the second device must be an Android phone or tablet.

WhatsApp Companion Mode: How Does It Work?

As per the report, when you do this your chat history will be synced across all the devices connected to your WhatsApp account. Even though Companion Mode has been made available to all beta testers, some functions, such as the ability to control broadcast lists and post status updates from attached devices, may still be missing.

This will allow you to connect up to four devices at once. Plus, even if you use WhatsApp from a phone that’s connected to it, your personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. The report states that when you receive a message, it is encrypted and delivered to all your devices.

WhatsApp Companion Mode: How to Connect a Second Android Mobile Device?

  • On your other Android phone, go to the Google Play Store and download the latest beta version of WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business.
  • Finally, when you tap on the overflow menu on the registration screen a “Connect device” option should appear.
  • Launch WhatsApp and on your main device select Settings > Connected devices.
  • Use this gadget to scan the QR code on your backup smartphone.
