6G at THz frequency level
This new achievement is even more special because it is the first successful wireless transmission made at the terahertz (THz) frequency level, which is said to be one of the most important components of 6G technology. Since THz frequency bands can maximize the potential of a larger amount of bandwidth, which will mean better performance. It is also expected to offer lower latency than optical fiber networks.
Currently, fiber networks are still preferred over wireless due to faster speeds and higher data transmission. This is not just limited to regular internet usage but also for heavy stuff. With 5G still not widely used in many parts of the world, there is a heavy reliance on fiber connectivity. But with 6G adopting the THz frequency band, performance is expected to be comparable to that of fiber networks.
China is not alone in this 6G race, although the US has reportedly held meetings with business leaders, government officials and academics to discuss the creation of 6G standards. Given China’s dominance in the connectivity space, the US appears to want to stay one step ahead of the competition.
There are still a few years left for the launch of 6G as it is predicted to be available only in 2030. The government is hoping to launch 6G infrastructure by 2029.
