Mumbai woman loses Rs 7 lakh after scammer lured her with credit card and free Android phone

Scammer promised credit card with club access and bought jewelery worth Rs 7 lakh instead

a cheater known by the name Saurabh Sharma managed to dupe a 40-year-old woman. Sharma approached the Mumbai resident posing as a bank official and offered him a credit card along with free membership in a local sports club. The woman took interest in the offer and was sent a free Android smartphone after Sharma assured her that the card could only be activated by an Android device and the woman was an iPhone user. The man also let him keep the Android phone after it was activated. The scammer had already obtained the woman’s personal details like Aadhaar number, name, date of birth etc. and received an Android smartphone at her address on the same day.

Android device was DOT Secure and Secure Envoy Authenticator apps are installed on it. The woman swapped out the SIM card from her existing iPhone and followed the scammer’s instructions. He then received two messages indicating a jewelery purchase transaction worth Rs 7 lakh. The woman collected the transaction details from the bank and proceeded to lodge a complaint with the police the next day.

It is reported that in 2022, cyber crime cases in Mumbai have increased by 63 percent. Business Standard also reports that out of 12,261 registered cases, 1,292 have been resolved so far.
